Transport department fines 217 vehicles for lack of high security registration plates

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Transport department imposed a penalty on 217 vehicles for operating without High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Vikasnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar, Tehri, and Uttarkashi. The regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Shailesh Tiwari said that during the inspection on Thursday, authorities checked vehicles for the absence of HSRP, use of fancy or artistic number plates and unauthorised number plates.

Tiwari said that under the provisions of Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, no vehicle is allowed to operate on the road without a valid registration plate as the absence of registration plates makes it difficult to trace vehicles involved in accidents or criminal activities. He stated that 217 vehicles were fined in the drive, out of which 143 challans were issued in Dehradun district alone. He further informed that not installing an HSRP is a punishable offense under Section 192 of the MV Act, 1988. “For the first offense, vehicle owners will face a fine of Rs 5,000, while repeat violations will result in a fine of Rs 10,000. If a vehicle is found operating without an HSRP for the second time, it will be seized,” he said.

He urged vehicle owners and drivers to comply with regulations by installing HSRPs and avoiding fancy or artistic number plates. Those requiring HSRPs can book them online at https://bookmyhsrp.com and get them installed at authorised vehicle dealerships.

The campaign will continue on Friday and citizens can also visit their nearest RTO office for more information, Tiwari added.
