Transport department issues 804 challans, seizes 19 vehicles during checking drive on Char Dham routes

A strict vehicle checking drive was launched on Char Dham routes to control road accidents, resulting in challans for 804 vehicles and seizure of 19 vehicles in the past two days. The campaign was conducted under the direction of regional transport officer (Enforcement) Anita Chamola across the Dehradun division, covering areas like Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Roorkee, Tehri and Uttarkashi. Enforcement teams, mobile squads, interceptors and bike squads were deployed for the checking drive on pilgrimage and other main routes.

Chamola informed that the enforcement teams conducted intensive vehicle checks on routes such as Dehradun-Mussoorie-Kempty, Vikasnagar-Badowala, Haridwar-Rishikesh, Roorkee-Haridwar, Rishikesh-Devprayag, Rishikesh-Chamba Tehri and Tehri-Uttarkashi. The teams checked vehicles including buses, taxis, maxis and private cars/jeeps. She informed that a total of 24 teams participated in the drive under the leadership of ARTOs and enforcement officials.

The teams conducted checks across different locations and issued 804 challans and seized 19 vehicles. She said that special focus was given to checking passenger vehicles. According to her, a total of 176 challans were issued for overloading in passenger vehicles. Besides this, 107 challans were issued for overspeeding, 31 for lack of vehicle fitness, 42 for operating without a permit, 62 for driving without a valid license and 97 for tax-related offenses.

Action was also recommended against the licenses of 22 drivers, she said. Chamola stated that the department will continue the campaign on Char Dham routes and take strict action against vehicle operators violating the law.
