The Transport department has issued orders to transport officers of Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi to take action against overcharging by public transport vehicle operators after receiving several complaints from passengers. The regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division, Shailesh Tiwari issued this order on Friday after conducting field inspections and booking rides in public transport vehicles to take cognisance of the complaints. He said that all transport officers concerned have been directed to ensure that the public transport vehicle operators display a legitimate fare list to prevent overcharging and take action against those who failed to comply with the rules. He said that the State Transport Authority (STA) increased the fare of all locally operating public transport vehicles in July this year which is a fair amount for operators. As per STA, an auto rickshaw driver can charge at the rate of Rs 60 for the first two kilometres and then charge at the rate of Rs 18 per kilometre for the remaining distance during the day. The drivers can charge up to 50 per cent extra between 10 PM to 5 AM which is again a fair amount but the department has been consistently getting such complaints. Tiwari said that the department will run massive campaigns against overcharging across the Dehradun division of RTO. He said that the department will also acknowledge the drivers charging fare as per STA by awarding them. He said that the RTO will soon start the process of installation of fare metres in auto rickshaws to prevent overcharging.
