The Transport department in Dehradun will act strictly against three-wheeler vehicles like Vikrams, auto rickshaws, and e-rickshaws that frequently carry students to school. Besides this, the regional transport office of the Dehradun division is all set to start the training of drivers of authorised school buses and private vans that carry children to schools daily. The regional transport officer (administration) Sunil Sharma said that there are about 330 buses and 250 vans that are registered with the RTO to carry children to and from schools daily.
As per the direction of the department, RTO will start training the drivers of these vehicles while making them aware of rules under the Motor Vehicles Act as well as CBSE guidelines that they must consider while carrying children to schools or homes. “These training sessions will include various aspects of road safety and precautions that are necessary while transporting students. An interactive session will highlight various points that need to be followed while students board and alight a vehicle,” said Sharma. He said that the RTO will also act against three-wheelers carrying school students daily. He said that vehicles carrying contract carriage permits are not authorised to transport children to schools frequently as it is against the MV rules.
“The department is taking these preventive measures to ensure that vehicles implement safety measures mandated by the government for children’s safety. I will also appeal to parents to not send their children in any vehicle just for the sake of sending them to school. It is mostly the parents who adjust their child in already filled vehicles so that the child does not get late. The parents should also prioritise the safety of children,” added Sharma.
