In view of recent fatal road accidents in the Mussoorie and Chakrata areas of the Dehradun district, the Transport department started a two-day checking campaign on Tuesday. The enforcement teams of the regional transport office of the Dehradun division penalised 872 people and seized 49 vehicles in its two-day campaign that concluded on Wednesday. The RTO (Enforcement), Shailesh Tiwari said that the campaign was conducted in vulnerable routes and areas of all districts under the Dehradun division including the Dehradun- Mussoorie- Kempty Fall route, Mussoorie- Hathipaon, Koti- Minas- Tyuni route, Tehri- Purola route and Uttarkashi- Gangotri route among others. The assistant regional transport officers conducted the campaign in their respective areas. The ARTOs imposed penalties on 872 vehicle owners including 376 in Dehradun, 436 in Haridwar, 38 in Tehri and 22 in Uttarkashi. Besides this, 27 vehicles were seized in Haridwar, 18 in Dehradun and four in Tehri. In the campaign, the enforcement teams found that traffic violations like overspeeding, driving without a seat belt, use of a mobile phone while driving, vehicle overloading, drunk driving and riding without a helmet were among the major causes of accidents in Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Roorkee, Haridwar and Tehri. The RTO said that the trend of two-wheeler riders driving without helmets is increasing which makes them prone to serious head injury in a two-wheeler accident. The department will soon start an intensive campaign against such offenders who refrain from wearing helmets. He said that the department is continuously issuing challans to such offenders through cameras as well. The intensity of issuing such challans will also be increased soon. Besides this, the department will also blacklist those vehicle owners who do not settle their challans in time, the RTO added.
