Transport Dept penalises over 500 for overloading and other violations

In view of frequent accidents that were caused due to overloading, the Transport department conducted a checking drive in various parts of the State on Friday. The enforcement teams of the department imposed penalties on over 500 vehicle users and seized 55 vehicles. The teams conducted checks at ISBT and Haridwar Bypass Road in Dehradun and imposed penalties on 144 vehicle users and seized 15 vehicles mainly for overloading and other violations. They also penalised and seized four buses and minibuses for unauthorised operation, the regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Shailesh Tiwari said. He informed that the team also imposed penalties on 23 vehicle users and seized six vehicles in Vikasnagar. In Haridwar, the first team under ARTO Rashmi Pant penalised 50 drivers and seized a bus for unauthorised operation as it had one extra seat installed against the rules. Besides this, the second team in Haridwar under the supervision of the transport tax officer Varuna Saini imposed penalties on 22 vehicle users out of which, six were  penalised for overloading and three private vehicles were carrying passengers. In Rishikesh, the team imposed penalties on 20 vehicles and seized six vehicles out of which, five were overloading passengers. In Roorkee, the team imposed penalties on 24 vehicles and seized eight vehicles out of which six were overloaded. In Nainital district, the department imposed penalties on 290 vehicles in the past two days. The two teams of transport officers were specially deployed in the morning and the evening at Haldwani-Haidakhan-Khansyu road, Haldwani- Haldwani-Kathgodam road, Kaladhungi- Nainital road and others to check traffic violations. The team imposed penalties on 21 buses, 97 taxis and cabs, 71 two-wheelers and 101 other vehicles. Besides this, six teams were also deployed across the Nainital district to check overloading and drivers driving without having the endorsement of mountainous routes on the license. The enforcement teams imposed penalties on 24 vehicles for no valid fitness documents, 34 vehicles for having no insurance, 27 vehicles with no valid permits and 23 vehicles for overloading passengers on mountainous routes. Besides this, the officials also imposed penalties on 16 drivers for operating without having the endorsement of mountainous routes on the license. The officials said that the department will continue this drive regularly, especially on the mountainside to check the overloading of passengers. The rainy season makes roads more vulnerable to accidents considering which, the respective officers were directed to ensure drivers operate vehicles safely, the officials said.
