The transport department will start checking and imposing penalties on the drivers of commercial and private vehicles with defective headlights, brake lights, parking lights and indicator lights from this week.
The department has issued orders to the assistant regional transport officers (ARTOs) of Haridwar, Roorkee, Dehradun, Vikasnagar and Rishikesh to mark such vehicles in their respective areas in order to minimise the risk of road accidents during winter, especially by the commercial vehicle operators. The regional transport officer (enforcement) Sandeep Saini informed that many road accidents can occur due to non-functional headlights, brake lights, parking lights among others, especially due to fog in winter.
Considering this, the ARTOs have been directed to mark such vehicles on highways as well as in the inner areas of their respective areas. He said that the officials will initially run a special checking campaign to raise awareness among the drivers to operate vehicles with working headlights among others. The department will take action under the relevant acts if the vehicle operators are caught violating the rules despite the warning, stated Saini.
