The Uttarakhand Transport Ministerial Employees Union will start a work boycott from Tuesday, protesting the government’s lack of response to its grievances over the suspension of four transport officials. These officials were suspended by the Transport department following the accident in Rudraprayag on June 15, which resulted in the deaths of 16 persons. The suspended officials, including the then Tapovan checkpost in-charge Yashveer Singh Bisht, junior assistant Vivek Uniyal, transport sub-inspector Mehtab Ali and transport constable Amar Saini, were accused of negligence at the Tapovan checkpost in Rishikesh on the day of the accident. Union members said that the senior department officials based their decision on a report from the lead agency which also highlighted the negligence of police and Public Works Department (PWD) personnel, who have not faced any disciplinary action. The general secretary of the union, Vinod Chamoli questioned why the police personnel, who were also deployed at the checkpost and along the route, have not been held accountable. He said that the department had requested the officiating director general of police, Abhinav Kumar, to initiate disciplinary action against the police personnel on duty that day, yet no such measures have been taken so far. Chamoli said that the transport ministerial employees staged a two hours work boycott on Monday and since the department failed to address their issue, they have decided to start a work boycott from Tuesday onwards across the State.
