Tributes paid to Nityanand on 98th birth anniversary

A one-day national seminar on traditional practices on disaster management in Uttarakhand was organised at Doon University on Friday. The event was organised under the joint aegis of the departments of Geology and Geography of the university and marked the 98th birth anniversary of noted Himalayan geographer Nityanand. The chief guest of the programme was the director of Vishwa Samwad Kendra Vijay Juneja. He said that apart from being a renowned academician, researcher and teacher Nityanand was a great human being who dedicated his entire life for the betterment of the people of Uttarakhand.
In her welcome address, the university vice chancellor Surekha Dangwal threw light on Nityanand’s life and work. She said that the Nityanand centre in Doon University is a tribute to his works and vision. Dangwal exhorted the faculty members and students to focus on research in the centre as envisioned by Nityanand.
Notedgeologist Piyoosh Rautela delivered a keynote address on the traditional practices in disaster management. He said that the people residing in the Himalaya used practices which were in sync with the nature and geology of the youngest mountain range of the world. He listed the old buildings which have endured many devastating earthquakes as an example of the traditional wisdom.
Social workerSuresh Suyal recollected his old association with Nityanand and said that he was a very simple down to earth person with a world class vision.
Rajeev Saran Ahluwalia of the department of geology highlighted the activities being undertaken by the centre.
