Tributes pour in following Shankaracharya’s demise

People from religious, social and political spheres have paid tributes to Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth and Dwarka Sharada Peeth, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati following his demise on Sunday. The 99 year Shankaracharya died after prolonged illness. A freedom fighter during his youth, the seer became the Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth –Joshimath in 1971 and of Dwarka Sharada Peeth in 1981. The official letter announcing his demise was issued by his personal secretary Swami Subodhanand.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief at the Shankaracharya’s demise and said that it was an irreparable loss for the religious fraternity and the whole nation. Expressing grief, Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyaya said that the Shankaracharya had always supported and provided guidance on issues related to the protection of the Himalaya apart from contributing to the freedom struggle. Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara and senior leaders of the Congress and BJP also expressed grief at the Shankaracharya’s demise. Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchayat spokesman Brijesh Sati said that Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati will be remembered for exemplary works in the religious sphere. A condolence gathering was also held in Joshimath.
