Police apprehended three men on Tuesday on charges of theft of jewellery and cash worth about Rs 8.5 lakh. The accused allegedly stole from a moving vehicle while the victims were en route from Haridwar railway station to Rishikesh. The stolen items included several pieces of gold jewellery and Rs 40,000 cash. The police recovered all the jewellery worth Rs 8.5 lakh and Rs 5,000 cash from the accused, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that the incident was reported by Dhalwala, Munikireti resident Ankit Bisht who filed a complaint at the Rishikesh police station.
According to the report, Bisht, his wife and mother had hired an autorickshaw from Haridwar railway station. Midway through the journey, the driver claimed a mechanical issue and directed them to another Vikram which already had three passengers on board. Under the pretext of limited space, the driver suggested that Bisht and his wife sit in the front while the complainant’s mother remained at the back with their luggage. “As per the complainant, the three passengers in the back discreetly stole jewellery and Rs 40,000 cash from the family’s suitcases. The theft came to light when the suspects disembarked, prompting Bisht to discover that their luggage had been tampered with,” he said. The police registered an FIR and started an investigation.
The SSP said that through extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering, the police identified and arrested the three accused, Mohammed Zakir, Wasim Ahmed and Mohammed Rashid, all residents of Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh.
