Two arrests within 48 hours, Govt clampdown on corruption continues

The Vigilance Establishment has arrested two corrupt public servants red handed while accepting bribes within 48 hours. Officials said that acting on chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s policy of zero tolerance for corruption, two corrupt government officials- one in Chamoli and the other in Pauri- were arrested in the act of accepting bribes. They claimed that this a clear sign of the government’s commitment to send the corrupt to jail.

On Saturday, the Vigilance team arrested revenue inspector (Kanungo), Kailash Ravi in the Agroda area of Pauri district red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. On the next day on Sunday, excise inspector Jaibeer Singh was arrested while accepting Rs 30,000 in bribe in the Karnprayag area of Chamoli district. The officials claimed that these two major arrests within 48 hours have given an impetus to the anti-corruption drive of the State government.

Since assuming office, Dhami had issued a stern warning to those with corrupt intentions. An application has been launched to enable the citizens to complain about corruption in the State. Posters of the corruption-free app 1064 have been displayed in most government offices to raise public awareness on this issue. More than 980 Vigilance and non-Vigilance complaints have been registered through this app so far. According to official sources, about 30 corrupt public servants were sent to jail during the past nine months with the latest arrests raising the number to 32. The Vigilance Establishment has ensure that the court sent 70 corrupt persons to jail during the past three years.

The chief minister has stressed that strict action will be taken in the future too against government employees who harass the public and indulge in corruption. Strict action will be taken against any person who indulges in corruption. The Vigilance Establishment will be empowered further to take effective and stern action to curb corruption, Dhami emphasised.
