Two labourers lost their lives and another was critically injured after falling into a septic tank pit while working in an under-construction house in the Manglaur area near Roorkee in Haridwar district on Monday. The officials informed that the accident took place in the Manglaur Kotwali area where construction work was ongoing. Two labourers, Rashid and Usman were tasked with removing the shuttering of the newly constructed house’s roof. After completing the work, they were about to leave when the slab covering a nearby septic tank pit collapsed. Rashid fell into the pit and in a desperate attempt to save him, Usman and another villager jumped in as well. Unfortunately, all three were rendered unconscious due to the toxic gases accumulated in the pit, the officials informed. They said that despite the efforts of people, Rashid and Usman could not be rescued and died on the spot. The third person, who was also gravely injured, was taken to the hospital by the police for treatment. The officials informed that the septic tank’s hazardous gases reportedly caused the labourers’ death. The police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post mortem. A police constable who also attempted to rescue the victims escaped unharmed, they informed. The investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken as per the post mortem examination report accordingly, they added.
