Two Kanwadias swept away after bridge collapse in Chidwasa

Two Kanwadias were reportedly swept away after a temporary wooden bridge got damaged as water in a nala rose suddenly near Chidwasa on the Gangotri-Gaumukh trek on Thursday. The Uttarkashi district magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht sought information about the incident from the Gangotri national park deputy director while directing officials to conduct search and rescue operation, ensure the safe exit of travellers from the Gaumukh area and make an alternate bridge without delay.
According to information provided by the Forest department the melting of a glacier resulted in sudden rise in the level of water in the Chidwasa nala about nine kilometres from Gangotri on the Gangotri-Gaumukh trek at about 3 PM. The sudden rise in the water level damaged a temporary wooden bridge built across the channel of water due to which two Kanwadias were swept away by the flowing water. Officials further informed that about 35 people are safe in the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam rest house and an Ashram near Bhojwasa in this area. The Forest department team is present in the area while the police, Forest department and State Disaster Response Force teams are undertaking search and rescue operations along with work on building an alternate bridge. The two men who were swept away in the river have been identified at present as Delhi residents Suraj and Monu.
