Two men died and nine sustained serious injuries after a truck fell into a gorge near Damta in Uttarkashi on Monday morning. The police circle officer (CO) SS Bhandari informed that there were a total of 11 people in the truck – most of whom were labourers from Roorkee. According to him, the truck fell into about a 100 metre deep gorge after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. A joint operation of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, fire services and others was run from early morning till 2 PM to rescue the injured and retrieve the dead bodies. Bhandari informed that two men were found dead and nine sustained serious injuries. The CO said that the injured were admitted to a community health centre for treatment where the doctors referred four injured men to a higher centre in Dehradun for treatment. The police said that they have informed the families of the deceased and injured men and the statements of the latter will be taken after their condition becomes stable.
