Two girls were swept away by the strong currents of the Ganga river in the vicinity of Geeta Kutir Ashram near Haripur Kalan in Raiwala, Dehradun on Monday morning. The officials informed that the incident occurred at about 11 AM when three siblings went to bathe at the Ganga Ghat in Railwala. The younger brother was swept away by the strong currents, prompting both the sisters to jump into the river to save him. Though the boy was rescued by locals, the two sisters were swept away in the river, the officials said. They stated that upon receiving the information, the local police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the site. A search operation, led by sub inspector of SDRF Pankaj Kharola, was conducted late till evening using rafts and deep diving equipment. However, the rescue team did not find either of the missing girls. The officials said that it is quite unlikely that the girls would have survived but they will resume the search for them on Tuesday. Besides this, the SDRF’s commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi also appealed to the people to not go near water bodies and asked parents to refrain children from visiting such places without any adult supervision, especially during monsoon.
