Two private universities in Dehradun have suspended 11 students involved in unruly behaviour on the basis of the reports provided by local police. The action comes a few days after a video clip of a violent altercation between two groups of youths spread on social media. The officials informed that the police started conducting a late night campaign after a fight broke out between two groups of students late at night on April 12 on a road in the Clement Town area that soon turned violent.
The students allegedly used sticks and knives in the fight which led to serious injuries to three students. Both groups also filed an FIR against each other. The senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar also suspended respective senior sub-inspector and night officer Rakesh Panwar and sub inspector Satyendra Bhati for their dereliction of duty at the time of the incident. During the campaign in the Premnagar area, police registered four cases against 13 unruly students studying in educational institutions located in suburban Dehradun.
The officials said that the police have arrested seven unruly students so far under section 151 of the Indian Penal Code and registered a case against 11 unruly students under Section 107/116 of the IPC. The police also issued a bond to these 11 students besides issuing challans. Police have also taken action against 66 students for violating several rules under the Motor Vehicles Act. The police sent a report of 11 disruptive and unruly students to their respective universities as per the order of SSP.
Taking cognisance of the report, the UPES and Uttaranchal University suspended five and six students respectively, said the officials. They said that they will continue to conduct such late night campaigns against unruly students across the district.
