UCC an assault on Sanatan Dharma: Harish Rawat

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a direct assault on the Sanatan Dharma.

In a statement on Tuesday, he said that though the Uttarakhand government is patting its back on the implementation of UCC, the fact remains that the provisions of the UCC are against the Sanatan culture. He said that the registration of live-in relationship and the authenticity given to it under the UCC is a blow on the sacred institution of marriage. In the Sanatan Dharma, the Sanskar of marriage is one of the most important Sanskar and the UCC is against this Sanskar.

Pertinently the Uttarakhand government celebrated Tuesday as the Uniform Civil Code Day in the State. The day marks one year of the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand. Many programmes were organised by the State government to highlight the process of the implementation of the UCC and its effect on the society.
