In the year 2024 which ended on Tuesday, the BJP government of Uttarakhand led by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami drew the attention of the people across the country for its decisions on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and implementation of a stringent anti riot law in the State. The UCC act was passed by the Vidhan Sabha on February 7, 2024.
The Act was based on the report of the expert committee headed by Justice (retd) Ranjana Prasad Desai. The notification for the law was issued on March 12, 2024 after the assent of the President of India. The Dhami government then constituted a nine member committee headed by former chief secretary Shatrughna Singh for preparing the regulation of the UCC. On October 18, this committee handed over the draft of the regulations to the CM. The CM has announced that the UCC will be implemented in the State from January 2025. Considering the assertion of the Narendra Modi government on UCC, it is very likely that the UCC of Uttarakhand will act as a template of the central law on the issue.
In February 2024, a riot broke out in Haldwani town in which the rioters damaged government and public property. Taking lessons from the riot, the Dhami government brought a strict anti riot law . In this law there is a provision to recover the damage caused to public and civil property in riots from the rioters.
The Women of Uttarakhand were given 30 per cent reservation in government jobs while the provision of 10 per cent reservation to the statehood activists was restored this year. Dhami government also undertook a massive campaign to free the government land from the encroachers and about 5,000 acres of the land was freed this year.
