As part of its deliberations to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Uttarakhand, the expert committee on UCC met the chairman of the Law Commission Rituraj Awasthi in New Delhi on Friday. The expert committee led by its chairperson Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai discussed the UCC with Awasthi in its meeting. In an informal interaction with the media, Desai informed that the committee shared the general information about the work done so far in Uttarakhand in relation to the UCC with the chairman of the National Law Commission.  She said that the work of basic consultation on the UCC has been done in Uttarakhand so far and discussions have been held with all the stakeholders in the state.  “The sub-committees of the UCC have held discussions in this regard with members of various religions, communities, stakeholders and sections of society.  A meeting has also been held with all the political parties in this regard and their suggestions have been obtained.  We hope that everyone will like our draft on UCC.  Our meetings on UCC are still going on and we are getting cooperation from all the communities,’’ she said.

It will be recalled that the State government constituted the expert committee on May 27, 2022 and directed it to submit its report within six months. The committee has so far been given two extensions. Justice (retd) Pramod Kohli, social worker Manu Gaur, former chief secretary of Uttarakhand Shatrughna Singh and vice chancellor of Doon University Surekha Dangwal are the members of the expert committee. The committee has been mandated to examine all existing and relevant laws regarding marriage, divorce, right for property, inheritance, adoption and protection for implementation of UCC in the State.
