UCC impractical, against constitutional provisions: Congress
PNS | DEHRADUN
The Congress has termed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implemented in the State on Monday by the Uttarakhand government impractical and against the provisions of the constitution.
Interacting with the media persons at the headquarters of the State Congress on Monday, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said that the section 44 of the constitution makes reference to such a civil code which is applicable in the entire country and not limited to any specific State.
Mahara said that UCC had never been the part of the public demand in Uttarakhand and it appears that it has been brought in the State as part of a political rhetoric.
Expressing strong objection to section three of the draft regulation of UCC, Mahara said that the provisions related to live -in relations are against the culture of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. The provisions of live-in relations give protection to illicit relations. He added that no parent will give approval to such a relationship when it comes to their children.
The PCC president also objected to the provision in UCC according to which anyone living in the State for a period of one year will be considered as a resident of the State. He said that this goes against the public demand of declaring 1950 as the cut-off date for being a domicile resident of the State.
