PNS | DEHRADUN

The MB vice chancellor ancellor of Doon University and member of the expert committee on Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Surekha Dangwal has said that the objective of the registration under the UCC is to preserve the demography of the State. She clarified that the registration under the UCC is not related to the domicile status or permanent residency certificate.

Dangwal said that all those who are residing in the State from one year are being brought under the purview of the UCC so that the demography of the State is preserved.

“ UCC is concerned with marriage divorce, live-in relationships and the will and it is not possible to link it with permanent residency or domicile status,’’ she said.

The VC of Doon University added that UCC registration will involve no additional benefits and the condition of permanent residents will be as per the conditions prevalent earlier and it was never an issue for the code committee.

She further clarified that the UCC registration can be equated with the condition that anyone can make his voter card of the area he currently resides.

Dangwal said that through UCC, the civil laws will only be regulated so that the local society and culture remains preserved. It will also help in putting a control on crime in the State, she said. Dangwal said that a large number of people from other States currently reside in Uttarakhand and they are taking benefit of the government schemes in the State. Such people will now be able to take benefit of these schemes only after registration under the UCC.  This arrangement will also help the State to have the data of marriages, divorce and live-in relationships, she said.

Dangwal averred that the facility of registration will help in providing a strong data base for the State government. She claimed that the UCC will help in strengthening the institution of marriage which has remained the basis of the prosperity of our society.
