The birth anniversary of dancer and choreographer Uday Shankar was celebrated at the Uday Shankar dance academy with various cultural performances in Almora on Wednesday. He lived and worked here for nearly seven years after establishing the Uday Shankar India Culture Center at this place. The academy’s member secretary Chandra Singh Chauhan said that in 1975, a proposal had been sent to the Directorate of Culture for a workshop on dance form on the theme of Deshi Kottam Samman Uday Shankar. From time to time, the Department of Culture and local artistes keep doing programmes in the academy. His legacy has been preserved, said Chauhan.
All India Radio director Partul Joshi said that Shankar’s birth anniversary should not be celebrated as a one-day event but as a festival in the city so that programmes can be organized in other parts of the city as well. Various dance and musical performances were staged on the occasion.
