Udham Singh Nagar police arrest man posing as army Subedar to scam Agniveer aspirants

The Udham Singh Nagar police have nabbed a man of the gang that allegedly ran scams by making false promises of selection to Agniveer aspirants by posing as an army Subedar. The police had arrested two gang members in November last year. The senior superintendent of police of Udham Singh Nagar, Manjunath TC said that a complainant named Tapas registered a complaint against two men in November 2022, who had asked him to pay Rs 50,000 and give them his original education-related documents with the promise to ensure his recruitment in the Agniveer recruitment in Kumaon regiment. When the complainant was not selected, he asked for his money back but both accused allegedly threatened him.

SSP said that the police arrested two accused Vicky Mandal and Pankaj Singh in the case the same month on the basis of the evidence collected through surveillance, manual and technical investigation.  Both have allegedly scammed and threatened nearly 200 people. TC said that if the aspirants used to get selected on their own, gang members ask for more money but if they fail to make it, the accused refuse to return their original documents and threaten them for more money. He said that the police have been constantly searching for the mastermind of the gang ‘Subedar’ Govind Singh in several districts of the State and neighbouring states who was absconding since November. He said that the Dineshpur police of the district finally nabbed him near a hospital in Haldwani. The police also recovered a car with ‘Defence’ written on it along with a fake ID card of the army and a fake liquor card.

Besides this, police also recovered 26 cheques allegedly received from Agniveer aspirants along with 12 debit and credit cards, said the SSP. He also announced a reward of Rs 2,000 for the police team which succeeded in nabbing Singh.
