UJVNL steps up to enhance power generation in winter

The UJVN Limited (UJVNL) has taken steps to enhance power generation during the winter season, including the initiation of production from the Ramganga hydroelectric project. Typically, power generation from most of UJVNL’s projects decreases with the onset of winter since these projects depend on river water flow from glaciers. However, from November to March, snowfall and extreme cold in the high Himalayan region significantly reduce river discharge. In light of this, UJVNL has implemented measures to assist consumers.

Stating this, UJVNL’s managing director Sandeep Singhal informed that the 198 MW Ramganga hydroelectric project was originally designed to meet Uttar Pradesh’s irrigation needs. This year, UJVNL has maintained ongoing discussions and requests with the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department regarding water release. Consequently, the Irrigation department began releasing water into the canal on December 2, allowing power generation from the project to start on the same day, he added.

He further said that since December 5, the project has consistently produced between 2.5 to 3.0 million units of electricity daily. By the end of November, the daily generation from the corporation’s powerhouses had fallen to 7 million units per day, but by December 8, it increased to 10.38 million units per day. During peak demand periods, the corporation’s projects are generating electricity at a capacity of 850 to 900 MW. He expressed gratitude to the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department, emphasising that the increased generation will help meet the state’s power requirements during winter and contribute to saving state revenue.
