With the approval given by the National Medical Council (NMC) for 100 MBBS seats in the government medical college Haridwar, the number of government medical colleges in the State has increased to five.
The State now has 625 seats in the government medical colleges. Interestingly two medical colleges, government medical college Almora and government medical college Haridwar have been set up in the last three years. Both these medical colleges have 100 seats each.
It is pertinent to mention here that both these medical colleges started during the tenure of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The State had government medical colleges in Dehradun ( 150 seats) , Haldwani ( 125 seats) and Srinagar ( 150 seats) prior to 2022. Immediately after taking charge as the CM of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami directed the officers to set up new medical colleges in the State.
Expressing happiness at NMC’s consent for a new medical college in Haridwar, CM Dhami said, “Our government is expanding quality health services by establishing new medical colleges in the State, this will also provide bright students with an opportunity to pursue medical studies at affordable rates in their own state. Efforts are now being made to start government medical colleges in Pithoragarh and Rudrapur.’’
