Drawing a parallel between the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the sexual assault on a minor girl in Almora allegedly by senior administrative officer of Delhi, AV Premnath and the rape of a minor in Uttarkashi district last month, the leader of opposition (LoP) in the Vidhan Sabha Yashpal Arya has said that these three incidents show that Uttarakhand has become a haven for illegal activities of the powerful.
He said that all the three above mentioned cases occurred in revenue police areas, a delay occurred in registering cases and in all of them the culprits were powerful people. Expressing deep concern Arya said that the three incidents clearly show that anarchy prevails in Uttarakhand. He said that a major portion of the State comes under the jurisdiction of the revenue police.
Arya said that when the mother of the minor in the Danda Kanda case of Almora got to know about sexual assault on her daughter she approached the local revenue police sub inspector and demanded legal action but he refrained from taking any action. The LoP said that since the alleged culprit is a powerful officer, the case against him was registered only when the senior officers were approached. He alleged that the accused in the Almora case has encroached upon hundreds of Nalis of land in mountainous areas and he tried hard to use his connections to escape. Arya claimed that the officer accused of sexually assault on a minor is known to misbehave and terrorise the locals and that some foundation is operating his resort. He said that orders to demolish this illegal resort had been given in the past but no action has occurred due to connections of this officer. Arya said that the investigation committee of additional district magistrate had decided to attach the land of the resort with the village land but no action on it occurred.
He further added that the murder of Ankita Bhandari and the sexual assault on the minor girl occurred in the illegal resorts and in both cases the victims are poor girls.
