Though regarded as one of the smaller States of the country Uttarakhand has always remained at the forefront in sending its youngsters to serve in the armed forces of the country. The State-wise representation in the list of the passing out contingent (PoC) at Indian Military Academy (IMA) on Saturday reaffirmed this quality of the State. Twenty five young men from this small predominantly mountainous state were part of the PoC on Saturday. Uttar Pradesh with 63 GCs led the table of State-wise representation of GCs and was followed by Bihar with 33 CCs. Another small State Haryana with 32 officers was at third place in the list while Maharashtra with 26 GCs occupied fourth spot.
Uttarakhand was in fifth position with its contribution of 25 GCs. Punjab with 23, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh with 19 each and Himachal Pradesh with 17 GCs are some of the other big contributors.
Incidentally Andhra Pradesh which is a major State has only one officer in the PoC. Telangana and West Bengal had only three GCs in the passing out batch of IMA.
The lack of interest of the people of Gujarat in serving in the armed forces was clearly evident as this time also as only two GCs were from this State. The states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh which were created along with Uttarakhand in the year 2000 also have less representation with only eight and five GC this time, despite being much bigger in area and population than Uttarakhand.
