U’khand economy showing significant improvement

 In a significant development on the economic front the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Uttarakhand has shown a remarkable growth. The GSDP of the State is currently estimated at Rs 3,46,000 crore.

The Secretary planning,  R Meenakshi Sundaram said that in the last 20 months, the GSDP of the State has increased by 1.3 times which shows that the State is on the right track to achieve the target taken by the State government in 2022 to double the GSDP in next five years.

The increased GSDP is also reflected in the per capita income (PCI) of the State which has shown an increase of 26 per cent in one year. The PCI of the State was 2.05 lakh in the year 2021-22 which increased to Rs 2.60 lakh in the year 2022-23. The PCI of India stood at Rs 1.84 lakh in the year 2022-23.

 Sundaram said that the periodic labour force survey (PLFS) data which shows people engaged in gainful employment shows that it has increased to 49 per cent in 2023-24 from 47.7 per cent in 2023-24 in the 15- 29 years age category and from 60.1 per cent in 2022-23 to 64.4 per cent in 2023-24  in 29- 59 years age category. He claimed that the State has performed better than the national average in the employment generation also.  The secretary further informed that the unemployment rate in Uttarakhand in the 15 -29 years age category has decreased from 14.2 per cent in the year 2022-23 to 9.8 per cent in 2023-24. Similarly the worker population ratio of women in the 15-29 year age category has increased from 24 per cent in 2022-23 to 32.4 per cent in 2023-24 and from 37 per cent in 2022-23 to 43.7 per cent in 2023-24 in the 15-60 years age category.

 Sundaram said that the increase in GSDP shows that the size of the economy of the State has grown which in turn has created more employment opportunities. He said the recent changes in policies such as amendment in shops and business establishment act and programmes like Lakhpati Didi scheme has contributed to increase in employment rate of women. Sundaram informed that tourism and manufacturing sectors in the State are showing good growth due to which the economic health of the State is increasing and more employment opportunities are getting created.
