It is learnt through RTI that the number of the inmates of the state jails is the twice their capacity. Now 6448 prisoners are being lodged in the jails while the jail’s combined capacity is 3441. Among them 2111 are convicts while 4773 are under-trial prisoners. This aside, Sampoornanand Open jail in Sitarganj is lodging 34 convicts. It is also learnt from RTI reply released recently that in all the jails in the state except Sampoornanand Open jail in Sitarganj, the number of inmates is more than the jails’ capacity.
