Uttarakhand has achieved the distinction of becoming the first state in the nation to adopt and enforce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) which has become effective from today. The UCC is meant to standardise personal laws across various religious communities excluding the Scheduled Tribe communities from its ambit. The move triggered both support and dissent. The principal opposition party in the State, Congress flayed the UCC as far from being uniform.

The Uttarakhand UCC will address a gamut of issues ranging from marriage, divorce and succession to live-in relationships with the establishment a uniform set of laws applicable to all citizens, regardless of their religions. Among the prominent provisions enshrined in the UCC are the mandates for equal marriageable ages for men and women, standardising uniform divorce laws and prohibition of practices like polygamy and ‘halala’.

While rolling out the UCC portal, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hailed it as a momentous achievement, making the Himalayan State the first in the nation to enforce this progressive legislation.
