U’khand Police seeks cyber crime solutions from 5 States after recent cyber attack

Following a recent cyberattack on several Uttarakhand government websites, the officiating director general of police, Abhinav Kumar, has reached out to his counterparts in five states in an effort to strengthen Uttarakhand’s cybercrime response system.

In a significant move to combat the rising threat of cybercrimes, Kumar wrote to the DGPs of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, seeking detailed information on the steps being taken to control cybercrimes in their respective states. In the letter, Kumar specifically asked for a comprehensive overview of the cybercrimes that have been registered in these states over the last three years. He sought details of offenses filed under the Information Technology Act, 2000, as well as other relevant sections. By analysing this data, the Uttarakhand Police hopes to conduct a comparative study that could shed light on trends and tactics used by cybercriminals across regions, which could, in turn, help to improve its own strategies.

Besides this, Kumar also requested detailed information about the infrastructure that has been set up in these states to combat cybercrimes. This includes the establishment of dedicated cybercrime units at the police station, district and state levels, the number of personnel trained specifically to deal with such offenses and the availability of technical resources. Kumar sought to understand the protocols these states have in place for dealing with significant cyber incidents, such as attacks on critical infrastructure, data breaches, and ransomware attacks. Information on crisis management teams and collaborations with private sector experts or national agencies were also part of the request. The insights from these states will guide Uttarakhand in building a more robust infrastructure that can better handle the complexities of modern cybercrimes, the DGP said.

Kumar stated that this initiative is a part of the Police department’s broader strategy to ensure the safety and security of the State’s digital infrastructure. He expressed confidence that the cooperation between these states would lead to a stronger collective response to the ever-evolving cyber threats facing India.
