Uttarakhand police will approach the police of neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi to raise awareness among pilgrims regarding the dos and don’ts during their journey in the State for Hemkund Sahib Yatra. The police want each pilgrim to comply with rules for their own and others’ safety during the Yatra, said the additional director general of police (crime, law and order) V Murugesan to The Pioneer.
He said that carrying lathis and use of modified silencers on bikes will be completely prohibited on Yatra routes along with tripling and other illegal activities. He said that the respective police in-charges have been ordered to ensure pilgrims comply with the rules by conducting regular checking and taking appropriate action against them under relevant acts. He said that district in-charges have been directed to spread awareness to make pilgrims more sensitive towards the rules. “We will also approach police of neighbouring States from where a large number of pilgrims arrive to visit Hemkund Sahib every year. We will coordinate with them to spread public awareness and make the pilgrims aware of what rules they need to follow before they begin their journey from their homes. We want to ensure they do not have to face any inconvenience during their journey in the State,” said ADG.
On the question of whether the police will also act against pilgrims carrying big religious flags on two-wheelers that can potentially cause traffic issues, Murugesan said that the police will ensure that religious sentiments are not hurt while maintaining law and order but appropriate action will be taken against every violation. The Hemkund Sahib Yatra is scheduled to start on May 20 and lakhs of pilgrims are expected to visit this year too.
