The end of term of the Rajya Sabha MP, Pradeep Tamta on July 4 and the certainty of unopposed election of the BJP candidate Kalpana Saini in his place would result in the end of representation of Congress party in the parliament from Uttarakhand. After the election of Saini, there would be no Congress MP from Uttarakhand in both the houses of parliament. In Lok Sabha, all five seats from the state are with the BJP while there are three seats from the state in RS which too would be occupied by the BJP members.

Incidentally it would be for the first time since the creation of the state that there would be no representation from the Congress party in the parliament. At present Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah (Tehri), Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank (Haridwar), Tirath Singh Rawat (Pauri), Ajay Bhatt (Udham Singh Nagar- Nainital) and Ajay Tamta (Almora- Pithoragarh) are the Lok Sabha members from the state. Similarly Anil Baluni, Naresh Bansal and Pradeep Tamta are the three RS members from the State. Among them Pradeep Tamta is the only Congress member and his term too is ending in July this year.

For the RS election on one seat from the State, the ruling BJP has nominated Kalpana Saini as its candidate. In view of the two-third majority enjoyed by the BJP in the State Assembly, the opposition Congress is showing no interest to field its candidate for the state. In the 70 member assembly, the ruling BJP has 47 members while Congress has only 19 MLAs.

It is worth mentioning here that since the creation of the State, Uttarakhand has been represented by 14 members in the RS so far and both BJP and Congress have had seven members each.
The State has been represented in RS by Sangh Priya Gautam (BJP), Manohar Kant Dhyani (BJP), Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Harish Rawat (Cong), Satyavrat Chaturvedi (Cong), Satish Sharma (Cong), Bhagat Singh Koshyari (BJP), Tarun Vijay (BJP),Mahendra Singh Mahara (Cong), Manorama Dobariyal Sharma (Cong), Raj Babbar (Cong), Pradeep Tamta (Cong), Anil Baluni (BJP) and Naresh Bansal (BJP).
