Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Uttarakhand will soon become the first State to implement the Uniform Civil Code. In an interview given to news agency ANI, Dhami said that the BJP had promised the UCC in Uttarakhand and the people gave its mandate to the party.
The State government has taken steps in this direction as per public expectations. He stressed that this will not be detrimental to any particular community, adding that it is the government’s responsibility to see that the original form of Uttarakhand is not distorted. The CM stated that efforts are being made to bring a uniform law for all people in Uttarakhand irrespective of their sect, community, religion or caste.
“The UCC is an important step taken in the direction of the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’ mantra. The view of the general public in this regard is also positive. The expert committee formed for implementation of the UCC sought the suggestions and ideas of more than two lakh people in about one and a half years. Our draft will be liked by other States also.
The draft committee formed under retired justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has prepared the draft after consultations with major stakeholders of all sections of society, all communities and castes. The draft will be presented in the Vidhan Sabha as soon as it is received,” said Dhami. The CM further said that Uttarakhand has two international borders and is a centre of religion, spiritualism and culture. A strict anti-conversion law was made in the interests of the State. Action will now be taken under this law against those indulging in religious conversion in Uttarakhand, he added.
