Facing flak from various quarters for continuing with the archaic practice of revenue police, the State government has expedited the process of adding the areas frequented by tourists into the jurisdiction of regular police. The chief secretary SS Sandhu held a video conference with the district magistrates and superintendents of police on Thursday to discuss the issue.
In the meeting, the CS said that the proposals for the areas which need to be immediately brought under the purview of the regular police should be sent to the government without any delay. He said that the proposals for setting up reporting posts, area expansion, and new police stations of regular police should also be sent to the administration. The CS said that since Uttarakhand is a tourism State and as a large number of women also work in the hospitality sector there is a need to work in a proactive manner. He suggested that the areas where tourist activities have increased in recent years should be added in the jurisdiction of regular police on priority. He directed the director general of police Ashok Kumar that all the heinous crimes which have occurred in the revenue police areas should be handed over to regular police and FIRs should be registered. He also directed that the category of heinous crimes should be made.
The additional chief secretary Radha Raturi said that a mechanism for registration or some other system should be developed for the women workforce in the State in which she could register information about her place of work. It would help in the instant retrieval of information in the case of any mishap.
Emphasizing the need to work proactively, Sandhu asked the DGP to start a mobile app in which working women can register their information. He added that a system of call centers can be developed in which the women are contacted on phone at regular intervals of time regarding their well-being and safety. The app should be publicized and women and their family members should be made aware of the safety of women.
