Relief to the people of Uttarakhand suffering from the current spell of the scorching heat is expected from Thursday. The State Meteorological Centre has forecast rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and hail in some districts of the State in the coming days.
The centre has issued an orange alert for the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh on May 28. In these districts, lightning accompanied by thunder, hailstorms and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kilometre per hour reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour are expected. Gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 km per hour are also expected in the remaining districts of the State.
For May 29, the centre has issued an orange alert for Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts during this period.
The centre has issued a yellow alert for May 30 and 31. Coming into an action mode following the alert, the State Emergency Operations Centre has directed the districts concerned to remain vigilant and ensure necessary precautionary measures. Instructions have been given to maintain special vigilance in sensitive areas and put disaster management departments on alert. The districts have also been asked to ensure that all their necessary resources are ready for immediate action.
Secretary of Disaster Management, Vinod Kumar Suman has appealed to the people to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather. He said that people should stay in safe places and stay away from trees, power poles and weak structures during lightning and strong winds.
