U’khand to give agriculture status of agriculture to fish farming : CM

With an objective of developing the fisheries sector in the state, the Uttarakhand government would soon roll out Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana ( MMSY) in the State on the lines of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). This declaration was made by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami while addressing a programme on the occasion of National Fish Farmers day by the department of Fisheries at IRDT auditorium here on Sunday. He also laid the foundation stone of a fish processing unit which would be established at Fisheries directorate. The CM said that fish culture would be given the status of agriculture and the power tariff for fish culture would be charged on the agriculture rates. He also announced setting up of fish Mandis in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions for the benefit of the fish farmers.
Congratulating the fish farmers, Dhami said that appreciable work is being done in the state in the field of fish farming. He said that the government is trying to ensure a good market for the produce of the fish farmers. Expressing happiness at spurt in fishery activity in the mountainous areas of the state, the CM said the sector is a new hope for the self employment opportunities. He said that the state government is trying to ensure that the social welfare schemes of the union and the state governments reach out to the last person standing on the social ladder.
Speaking on the occasion, Fisheries Development minister Saurabh Bahuguna said that there are many opportunities in the fisheries sector in the state. He informed that about 11,000 persons are directly or indirectly associated with the fish culture in the state. Bahuguna said that 336 individual and 17 cooperative committees have benefited from the PMMSY in Uttarakhand. He informed that the state government is promoting the setting up of trout farming projects in the remote areas located at high altitudes.
The CM also inspected different stalls of the fisheries department on the occasion. He also handed over motorcycles and ice boxes to two beneficiaries of the PMMSY on the occasion. The Rajpur Road MLA Khajan Das, Doiwala MLA Brij Bhushan Gairola, Raipur MLA Umesh Sharma Kau, secretary R Meenakshi Sundaram and others were present on the occasion.
