Uttarakhand will become the first State in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27. The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will announce formal implementation of the UCC in the State by unveiling its regulations and inauguration of the UCC portal in a programme at his residence on the day.
In a letter directed to additional chief secretary, principal secretaries, secretaries, additional secretaries, director general of police and all additional DGs, inspector generals and deputy inspector generals of the State, the Home secretary Shailash Bagauli has asked them to attend the ceremony at CM’s residence at 12:30 PM on January 27. It is pertinent to mention here that CM Dhami had announced implementation of UCC in the State in the month of January, 2024. Interestingly the new law is being implemented in the State, a day before the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the State. The PM will visit Uttarakhand on January 28 to declare the 38th National Games being hosted by the State, open.
The Dhami government had constituted an expert committee headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai on May 27, 2022. The committee handed over its report to the CM on February 2, 2024. On February 6, the government tabled the UCC bill in the Vidhan Sabha and on February 7, 2024 it was passed by the Assembly.
After the passage of the historic bill, the President of India gave her approval to the UCC bill on March 11, 2024. The draft of the regulations of the UCC was prepared by a committee headed by former chief secretary Shatrughna Singh.
