Cabinet directs Disaster Management department to prepare proposal for increasing the compensation amount
The Uttarakhand government has taken an in principle decision to increase the compensation provided to the disaster affected families in the State. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held an elaborate discussion on the recent cloudburst triggered disaster in many parts of the state with his ministers after the meeting of state cabinet on Wednesday. In the meeting the department of disaster management was directed by the government to prepare a proposal to increase the compensation given to the victims of the disaster.
The chief secretary S S Sandhu told the media persons that the cabinet held an informal discussion on the recent disaster and the relief and rescue operations. He said that a decision to increase the compensation has been taken and the department concerned has been asked to make a proposal and provide details on it.
The deliberation of the State administration on compensation amount assumes significance since a demand for increasing the existing compensation has been made from various quarters. As of now there is provision of payment of compensation of one lakh rupees to the next of kin of the deceased in the natural disaster while a sum of Rs 1,01,000 is paid in mountainous areas of Rs 95,000 in plain area as compensation for damage to house in disaster.
