Uttarakhand Transport Corp incurred loss of Rs 595 crore- Minister

The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) has incurred a loss of Rs 595 crore since its inception. In response to a question by the Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh, the Transport minister Chandan Ram Das informed the house that the UTC came into existence on October 31, 2003 and since then it has incurred a loss of Rs 595.12 crore. The minister elaborated that the corporation suffered losses due to free travel facilities, operational losses in plying of buses in mountainous routes, interest incurred on the loan taken for purchase of new buses and the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that efforts are being made to make the UTC a profit making entity along with steps like selling the space on the buses for advertising and monetisation of the land owned by the corporation. The minister added that courier service and installation of CNG kits are some of the other efforts in the direction of making profit. He said that efforts are being made for improving the working and modernisation of the corporation. In response to a supplementary question by the Congress MLA Pritam Singh, the minister informed that the UTC earned an income of Rs three crore from the advertisement on the buses and added that the CNG kits are being installed in the buses which would reduce fuel expenses.
