Under mounting pressure, MDDA postpones demolition drive for 2nd consecutive day

Thursday, 27 June 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Due to continuous pressure from slum dwellers and political parties, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) postponed its demolition drive in the Rajpur area along the Rispana riverbed for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. The slum dwellers have claimed that MDDA did not properly check their documents before marking their houses for demolition. In response, the teams rechecked documents like electricity bills and water bills on Wednesday to verify the construction dates of the structures. These documents are being used by MDDA to determine whether the structures were built before 2016.

The outgoing councillor of the area Urmila Thapa said that the locals have claimed that the MDDA officials marked their houses for demolition without properly checking their documents. Many said that their houses were demolished on Monday despite having valid documents that showed that the structures were built before 2016, she said. She stated that the MDDA teams on Wednesday thoroughly checked the documents of slum dwellers. “They visited several houses and checked each document presented to them properly since Wednesday morning. The locals also appeared satisfied with the team’s conduct,” she said. The officials said that MDDA will possibly resume the demolition drive within two days.
