While the police continue to arrest peddlers of hard drugs consistently, the trafficking of smack appears to continue unabated from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to Haridwar. On Friday night, the Shyampur police arrested a man with about 200 grammes of smack with a market value of about Rs one crore. The accused who was nabbed by the police acting on a tip off had been supplying consignments of the contraband to Haridwar for quite some time now, said the officials.

Superintendent of police (City) Swatantra Kumar Singh said that the special operations group (SOG) and Shyampur police arrested a smack smuggler in a joint effort.  The team was engaged for the last one month in efforts aimed at arresting the accused identified as Kaleem, a resident of Saharanpur in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. On Friday night, the police received information that the dealer was arriving again in Haridwar to deliver a consignment of smack in the area.  On the basis of this information, the police team nabbed Kalim and recovered about 200 grammes of smack from him. The SP said that the police will continue its campaign against drugs in the district.

It will be recalled that earlier on October 20 the police had caught a man with 200 grammes of smack in Ranipur. The accused was identified as Manglaur native Rizwan who had said that he had bought the smack from a man named Shabbir of Moradabad in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
