The vector-borne disease dengue is showing no signs of respite in Uttarakhand. The State Health department reported a total of 95 new cases of the disease from different parts of the State on Tuesday which increased the cumulative patient count to 1,758 in the State this season. As per the department data a total of 1,400 patients have recovered from the disease so far while the number of active patients is 344 in the State. The authorities reported 24 new cases of the disease from Pauri, 22 from Haridwar, 19 from Nainital, 16 from Dehradun, six each from Tehri and Chamoli and two from Udham Singh Nagar on Tuesday.

The department has so far reported the death of 14 patients from the disease with Dehradun district alone reporting 13 deaths. The district health authorities of Dehradun inform that deaths of three patients each have occurred in Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital and Mahant Indiresh hospital while two patients have died each in Synergy and Kailash hospital so far. Death of one patient each has occurred in Kanishk and Kailash hospital. The district has reported 810 cases of the disease this season out of which 675 have recovered from the disease.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by the mosquito Aedes Aezypti popularly known as Tiger Mosquito.  The symptoms of the disease are persistent high fever, rashes, headache and pain in the joints. In the acute cases the platelets number decreases drastically which may prove fatal for the patient.

Doctors state that in order to prevent dengue one must not allow water to collect in and near houses, regularly decant fridges, coolers, pots or cans in the houses, spread kerosene or any other oil on the small water bodies to destroy the larvae of the aedes mosquito and resort to regular fogging to kill mosquitoes. Since the aedes strikes during day time and flies near ground level one must wear full sleeved clothes at work places and immediately seek medical advice when someone develops fever.
