A Dehradun resident was allegedly swindled of Rs 1.29 lakh by an agent who promised to send him to the United States for a job. As per the complaint, the man, identified as Anil Lal, came in contact with the agent through Facebook on July 13. The agent allegedly promised to arrange a US work visa and a job for him at a restaurant.
The agent allegedly demanded Rs 1,29,870 from Lal for the process. Lal said he had transferred the amount in several instalments between July 13 and September 16.
Lal further alleged in the complaint that the agent, who introduced himself as Karna Prasad, had also asked him to send his passport for visa processing. He had sent the passport to an address in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, which was described as the address of the US Embassy, the complaint stated.
The complainant said that the agent had later given him some visa- related documents and told him that his flight would be at 10 PM on September 17. However, the agent had allegedly switched off his phone after that and stopped responding.
Lal said that he had later contacted the US Embassy by email on September 19 to seek information about his passport.
The Kotwali police said that police have registered a case in this matter and started an investigation.
