The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal stated that the commission will take strict measures against any incidents of misconduct with women occurring in the state. She said this during the inspection of the sub-jail in Haldwani on Monday.
The prison in Haldwani currently houses 77 female inmates. During her visit, Kandwal addressed the women inmates and assured them that if they encounter any issues during their stay, they should feel free to express their concerns without hesitation. She further said that efforts are underway to promote self-employment among female prisoners, to empower them economically after their release. In this regard, the women in jail will receive employment-oriented training, as well as raw materials to start their businesses. The aim is to connect the prisoners to self-help groups and facilitate the sale of goods produced by them in the market, Kandwal said.
She further expressed her satisfaction with the arrangements provided for the prisoners, acknowledging that the administration is diligently carrying out its responsibilities. She added that the State government has been proactive in promoting women empowerment. As a result, the government has recently approved a comprehensive women’s policy that will be implemented throughout the State. In addition, a recent investors summit was organised in Dehradun which was aimed at also expanding the global market for the products of women self-help groups. The said endeavour is expected to play a significant role in the empowerment and economic development of women, she said.
