The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) has refuted allegations of overcrowding and lack of proper medical attention at the government women welfare and rehabilitation centre in Dehradun. A media report had recently claimed that the centre has accommodation for 75 women whereas at present 130 women were living there. Apart from this, it was also reported that a doctor visits the centre once a month to check the condition of the inmates. Further, the centre has only one to two nurses to take care of the health of the women, the report had claimed.
However, the chairperson of USCW Kusum Kandwal refuted the allegations of overcrowding of women at the centre. She said, “Recently I visited the centre and performed a detailed inspection over there. During the inspection, I found the facilities for the women satisfactory at the centre. There are eight rooms with 148 beds for the women at the centre.”
According to the USCW, the centre doctor works as part of a part time system. A doctor from the Coronation hospital visits the centre weekly for check-ups. Apart from this during any medical emergency, doctors check the women patients at the centre through a video call. The commission further stated that the centre has eight to 12 nurses to take care of the women inmates. The USCW head informed that the commission will conduct an inspection of the centre again in the near future. She further added that the commission will take strict action in case any irregularities are found at the centre.
