The operation of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) buses that were requisitioned for the Lok Sabha election held on April 19 will fully resume from Monday. The transport department had requisitioned about 300 buses of UTC two days before the election due to which the bus services remained suspended in some areas in the State besides on the Dehradun- Delhi route.
The requisitioned buses were used to carry booth level officers, poll officers and polling parties to various polling stations in the mountainous and nearby areas. Some UTC buses were also used by the paramilitary forces and administrative staff deployed for election duty. The bus services were mainly hit on routes like Dehradun- Kathian, Dehradun- Lansdowne, Dehradun- Bhorgaon, Dehradun- Pauri, Dehradun- Kairad, Dehradun- Devalkot- Hapla- Pokhri, Dehradun- Hanol and Dehradun- Mussoorie.
The corporation is estimated to have suffered a loss of about Rs 50-60 lakh on a daily basis due to the requisition. The general manager of UTC Deepak Jain said that about 200 buses had returned from polling booths across the State on Saturday and the remaining are expected to return by late on Sunday. The UTC has already resumed buses on the Dehradun- Delhi route on Saturday. The bus services will resume fully from Monday onwards, he said.
