A utility vehicle carrying about 10 students fell off the road in Badkot town of Uttarkashi district on Monday morning. The driver has claimed brake failure to be the reason for the accident and the authorities concerned will verify whether it is true, said a senior police official of Badkot. He said that the vehicle in which students were going to school fell about 30 metres down the mountainside in the Dharali area of the town when the driver was trying to take a turn.
The driver and four to five students sustained some injuries and were sent to the hospital in the town after police got information about the accident. “All the students were sent home safely including those who sustained minor injuries. We enquired from the driver who said he tried to apply brakes near a turn on the road but realised the brakes were not working and the vehicle fell down the mountainside. We are yet to retrieve the vehicle to consider the condition of the vehicle. The police team along with the officials concerned will soon verify the driver’s claim. If the claim turns out to be false, legal action will be taken against the driver,” said an official.
