Uttarakhand Lok Virasat fest in Doon on December 2-3

Monday, 16 October 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Uttarakhand Lok Virasat festival will be held in Dehradun on December 2 and 3. The aim of the event is to encourage and popularise the native culture of Uttarakhand, its artists and traditional musical instruments. An exhibition of regional dresses from various districts of the State will also be held as part of the event this year. The two-day event will be held at the Social Baluni School, informed the Chardham hospital director Dr KP Joshi.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, Joshi said that his purpose behind organising the Uttarakhand Lok Virasat festival is to provide a platform to the artists of the State. Citing an example, he said that the cap made from Ringal (hill bamboo) fibres is quite popular in the mountains and popularising this product in the cities can help connect people in the mountains to better income generation activities. He said that he is also attempting to give a platform to talented people who are not known much in the public as in the case of musicians, drummers and dancers. “We are also trying to save the arts which are fading away. The aim of this festival is also to connect the younger generation to the native culture of Uttarakhand. At the same time, we also want to provide a market for the talents of the artists and thus also help mitigate migration from the mountainous regions of the State. Stalls of Pahadi foods and handicrafts exhibition will also be part of the event. Noted folk singers Narendra Singh Negi, Pritam Bharatwan, Meena Rana, Sangeeta Dhaundiyal, Gaurav Maithani and others will also participate in the Lok Virasat event,” said Dr Joshi.

Former director of the Industry department, Sudhir Nautiyal said that there are different folk arts in different districts and that this event will provide the people an opportunity to view the folk culture of all districts in one place.
